We saw in class the second chapter about culture and then( and the next day) in groups, we thought about some examples of each category of the chapter. Here are the example we made in my group (Anouk,Amy,Maria…)

EXAMPLES OF CULTURE

What is culture?

·         When parents teach their children to say “please” and “thank you”

·         Americans walk on the right side

·         The distance individuals should maintain when talking to one another is learned through observations

·         Spanish people give kisses on the cheek when they meet, Americans shake hands

CULTURE IS SYMBOLIC

·         flags

·         national anthem

·         language

·         traffic signs

CULTURE AND NATURE

·         Americans have their main meal at dinner, Spanish at lunch

·         Meal times differ as well: Americans eat dinner much earlier than Spanish

·         Cuisine is unique to a culture

CULTURE AND THE INDIVIDUAL: AGENCY AND PRACTICE

Ideal Culture/ Real Culture:

·         Everyone has the right to vote, not everyone does

·         We have specific dietary guidelines, obesity is a critical problem

ETHNOCENTRISM, CULTURAL RELATIVISM, AND HUMAN RIGHTS

·         medicinal plants: hoodia plant in the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa now used in diet pills
